Patterns and Light

One of the reasons I enjoy photography is that it trains your eye to notice and see things that one might not normally see. I think that concept parallels the recognition of patterns in ideas; the reason I enjoy studying music is not the musical experience, per se, as much as the perception and interplay [...]

Yosemite#4

Today was the last full day. Tomorrow we eat and head out; we’re going to try and stop by the Mariposa Seqoias. It was another beautiful day, but with clouds – always the photographers friend – less boring skies.
We went to Vernal Falls, well, part of it. We did the part to [...]

Yosemite#3

It’s understandable why Yosemite is such a popular spot – it’s just incredible, and you never get tired of staring at these amazing sights – it’s like watching a fire. Today was another gorgeous day. Late afternoon we finally got some clouds and very light rain.

Yosemite#2

Another beautiful day – wonderful.
A few more pics (man, my sensor has a ton of dust bunnies – I need to get it into Nikon!).

Yosemite#1

A few shots from our first-ever trip to Yosemite (these are quick-edits from Picasa – no PS yet). These are from Yosemite Lodge Falls (lower). The rock the girls are on is a natural granite slide.

The excessive rain we have been having this “winter” has provided some stunning views of the local mountains, and quite a bit of snow on the peaks. Here’s a couple more pics. Both are just down the street from our house. The first is judiciously cropped, but yes, it really is Long [...]

Defining Photography in Digital

An article in Newsweek by Peter Plagens asks “Is photography dead?” It presents in concise outline the talking points: realism and it’s relevancy, PS manipulation, ethics of manipulation, “fantasy” photography, etc. As an amateur photographer who got seriously interested at the tail end of film, I’ve found this an increasingly interesting question – [...]

Update on color space

I originally posted about RGB color space and Adobe color space here; I’ve subsequently been introduced to Shootsmarter.com, and an article by Will Crockett on this same issue. He confirms that RGB is the way to go. He has a massive shooting studio and school in Chicago where they also conduct numerous tests. [...]

Photography and Color Space

I’ve mostly enjoyed Ken Rockwell’s photogaphy articles for a couple years now (he gets a little too glib some times). I just saw an article by him on color space , specifically, sRGB versus Adobe98 RGB, and found it to be really helpful. I’m definitely going to try it.
